Rocket Chinese is a popular Chinese learning system. Does it actually work?

Rocket Chinese is a software system for download or as a set of CDs. Inside you will find audio recordings, special software games, videos, and more. In addition to that, you get access to the Learning Lounge where you can test your progress, and communicate with other users and instructors.
The basic approach is to teach Chinese by Visual Association. You learned your mother tongue by visual association. You SAW an object and HEARD the word simultaneously. In this way you quickly and effortlessly learned the meanings of words. Rocket Chinese attempts to replicate this process with the use of software, audio, and video.
DOES IT WORK?
IF you are ready to work with the program in a consistent way, Rocket Chinese can be extremely powerful. Ideally, you should attempt to view the material for some time everyday (at least 30 min – 1 hr a day). The individual lessons are made to build on one another. Therefore, being consistent is very important.
Learning a language is much like learning to ride a bike. For the first week or so you might feel that you aren’t getting anywhere. If you persist, however, you will hit a point where things suddenly “fall into place”. You will find that you are suddenly able to hear most of the words in the audio recordings and can create basic sentences easily.
You can then add more vocabulary and advanced grammar to your repertoire.
IS IT THE BEST WAY TO GO FOR EVERY STUDENT?
Some students find it hard to focus if there is no outside pressure like an upcoming “exam” or an instructor checking their “homework”.
Rocket Chinese is a learn at home system. It is very powerful but you have to provide the consistency yourself.
If you think you might need the pressure of a classroom setting in order to take action, consider classes at a local college. Remember, however, that classroom instruction will cost more and will take longer.

This series of four boxes is the largest and most useful of the three sets of Chinese flash cards that I have attempted to use this year.
On one side these cards present:
— the simplified Hanzi and corresponding Pinyin pronunciation and English
— the Hanzi radical under which Chinese dictionaries list the character and the set of component radicals in the character
— an example of use in Hanzi, Pinyin and English
— a series of multi-character words using this character, where each line presents one such multi-character word in Hanzi, Pinyin and English.
On the other side these cards present the simplified and, when different, the traditional Hanzi character, the stroke order for the simplified character, and the simplified Hanzi for the series of multi-character words that are defined on the first side of the card. Together these enable self-test of Hanzi-to-Pinyin and Hanzi-to-English for both the single Hanzi character of the card and for those multi-character words whose pronunciations and definitions are on the reverse.
Each side of the card also gives the card number (of a total of 1792 cards in Volumes 1-4), simplifying card sorting and indexed computerized references where that is desired.
